Life-size Two Large Bronze Statues Riace Warriors Style Erectheus & Eumolpos . The Original Riace Warriors Dating back to 460-430 BC were discovered on the Calabrian coast in the year 1972,after they’ve been restored now they sit at the museum of Reggio Calabria.
It’s believed that when Rome conquered Greece, they stole
most of the important artistic patrimoine and they transported them back to
Rome.
They have been as the warriors Tydeus and Amphiaraus. But
the Very highly regarded historian and archaeologist Salvatore Setti identified
them as Erectheus the son of Athena and Eumolpos the son of Poseidon.
Over the years, we’ve seen small decorative cast statues
made by foundries in Italy as “Bibelot”.
The ones listed have
the approximate dimensions and details of the original Statues and by repute
from the earlier casting, that’s why they have all of the right details and
proportions. The casting would be around 1975-1985.
HISTORY: The Riace Warriors (also referred to as the Riace
bronzes or Bronzi di Riace) are two life-size Greek bronze statues of naked,
bearded warriors. The statues were discovered by Stefano Mariottini in the
Mediterranean Sea just off the coast of Riace Marina, Italy, on August 16,
1972. The statues are currently housed in the Museo Nazionale della Magna
Grecia in the Italian city of Reggio Calabria. The statues are commonly
referred to as “Statue A” and “Statue B” and were originally cast using the
lost-wax technique.
The Severe or Early Classical style describes the trends in
Greek sculpture between c. 490 and 450 B.C.E. Artistically this stylistic phase
represents a transition from the rather austere and static Archaic style of the
sixth century B.C.E. to the more idealized Classical style. The Severe style is
marked by an increased interest in the use of bronze as a medium as well as an
increase in the characterization of the sculpture, among other features.
The chronology of the Riace warriors has been a matter of
scholarly contention since their discovery. In essence there are two schools of
thought—one holds that the warriors are fifth century B.C.E. originals that
were created between 460 and 420 B.C.E., while another holds that the statues
were produced later and consciously imitate Early Classical sculpture. Those
that support the earlier chronology argue that Statue A is the earlier of the
two pieces. Those scholars also make a connection between the warriors and the
workshops of famous ancient sculptors. For instance, some scholars suggest that
the sculptor Myron crafted Statue A, while Alkamenes created Statue B.
Additionally, those who support the earlier chronology point to the Severe
Style as a clear indication of an Early Classical date for these two
masterpieces.
The art historian B. S. Ridgway presents a dissenting view,
contending that the statues should not be assigned to the fifth century B.C.E.,
arguing instead that they were most likely produced together after 100 B.C.E.
Ridgway feels that the statues indicate an interest in Early Classical
iconography during the Hellenistic period.
In terms of identifications, there has been speculation that
the two statues represent Tydeus (Statue A) and Amphiaraus (Statue B), two
warriors from Aeschylus’ tragic play, Seven Against Thebes (about Polyneices
after the fall of his father, King Oedipus), and may have been part of a
monumental sculptural composition. A group from Argos described by Pausanias
(the Greek traveler and writer) is often cited in connection to this
conjecture: “A little farther on is a sanctuary of the Seasons. On coming back
from here you see statues of Polyneices, the son of Oedipus, and of all the
chieftains who with him were killed in battle at the wall of Thebes

The most striking thing about the young man was his physical
appearance. He was known for his great beauty, which was depicted numerous
times by artists, often long after his death. The sculptures portray a young
man with thick, curly hair and a full mouth. From his radiant countenance to
his sculpted physique, Antinous personified the epitome of physical
attractiveness and became an eternal symbol of timeless beauty. Based on the
existing busts and other artistic portrayals, Antinous physical appearance was
sometimes taken as a clue that the young man was not solely of Greek ancestry.
Hadrian seems to have favored men as sexual and romantic
partners, and Antinous was his most famous favorite. Historians today agree
that there was a sexual component to their relationship, a fact that was
well-known in Roman times. Antinous was not the first male companion that
Hadrian took in his life, and this sort of relationship was socially acceptable
then.
Some of the busts that exist and were the reason studies
such as our piece was made after, here are the Four : 1- Part of a statue of
Antinous depicted as Apollo, 130-138 AD, from the Via dei Fori Imperiali Rome
Centrale Montemartini, Rome. 2- Bust of
Antinous, 130-138 AD, Galleria degli Uffizi, Florence Carole Raddato CC
BY-SA. 3- Bust of Antinous, found at
Hadrian’s Villa in 1790, Vatican Museums. 4- Portrait bust with head of
Antinous. Found in Patras in 1856 along with bust no. 418. Dated a little after
130 AD. Inv. no. 417.
Antinous, son of Eupeithes , Greek: c. 111 – c. 130 was a young Greek man from Bithynia and a
favorite and likely lover of the Roman emperor Hadrian. Following his death
aged eighteen, Antinous was deified (made into a deity a God of the beauty ) on
Hadrian's order s, being worshipped in both the Greek East and Latin West,
sometimes as a god and sometimes as a hero.
Little is known of Antinous's life, although it is known
that he was born in Claudio polis (present day Bolu, Turkey), in the Roman
province of Bithynia. He was probably introduced to Hadrian in 123, before
being taken to Italy for a higher education.
He had become the favorite of Hadrian by 128, when he was
taken on a tour of the Roman Empire as part a group of people accompanying
Hadrian. Antinous accompanied Hadrian when he attended the yearly Eleusinian
Mysteries religious rites in Athens, and was with him when he killed the
Marousian lion in Libya, an event highly publicized by the Emperor. In October
130, as they were part of a flotilla (group of small warships) going along the
Nile, Antinous died amid mysterious circumstances. A number of suggestions have
been put forward for how he died, ranging from an accidental drowning to an
intentional human sacrifice or suicide.
After his death, Hadrian deified Antinous and founded an
organized cult devoted to his worship that spread throughout the Roman Empire.
Hadrian founded the city of Antinoöpolis close to Antinous's place of death,
which became a cultic center for the worship of Osiris-Antinous. Hadrian also
founded games in commemoration of Antinous to take place in both Antinoöpolis
and Athens, with Antinous becoming a symbol of Hadrian's dreams of
pan-Hellenism. The worship of Antinous proved to be one of the most enduring
and popular of cults of deified humans in the Roman Empire, and events
continued to be founded in his honor long after Hadrian's death. Antinous
became a symbol of male homosexuality in Western culture, appearing in the work
of Oscar Wilde and Fernando Pessoa.

Rare Pair French Retour D'egypt Terracotta Lions Sculptures
Statues Los Angeles , Exceptional fine pair of Large French Retour D'egypt
period terracotta lions, circa 1790-1810.
The French Egyptian Revival style or the retour d'Egypte
refers to style that makes use of the motifs and imagery of ancient Egypt. By
the end of the 18th century enthusiasm for ancient Egypt generated by
Napoleon's unsuccessful conquest of Egypt and, in Britain, to Admiral Nelson's
defeat of Napoleon at the Battle of the Nile in 1798. Napoleon took a
scientific expedition with him to Egypt and this was the first time a major
study of ancient Egypt was done. Publication of the expedition's work, the description
de l'Égypte, began in 1809 and came out in a series though 1826 influencing a
new way of life in France thru architecture and decorative arts. However, works
of art, decorative arts, furniture and, in the field of architecture and garden
follies, funerary monuments in the Egyptian style had appeared in scattered
European settings from the time of the Renaissance.
The Egyptian Revival style came out in a few waves in France
before Napoleon during the ancient Régime Egyptian motifs were mixed with the
neoclassical-Louis XVI style in architecture, furniture and decorative arts. A
big surge hit France around 1798 during Napoleons Egyptian expedition. This was
the first major Egyptian Revival period as this was the first time in history
that a major study on Egypt was done. French people became fascinated with the
ancient Egyptian history, culture, architecture and furniture. Egyptian
ornamentation like scarab beetles, sphinxes, winged lions and lotuses details
were incorporated into Classical style furniture and decorative arts creating a
style known as a hybrid neo-Egyptian.
The next wave was during the height of the French Romantic
period 1820s-1850s. The Egyptian Revival emerged as a result of the famous
archaeological digs of the first half of the 19th century and was primarily
used for Tomb memorials, temples, and cemeteries and some decorative arts. This
style is distinguished by its adaptation of Egyptian forms and motifs, sphinxes
guarding buildings including lotus blossoms, Pharaoh's heads, the winged disk
symbol of the sun God, as well as the use of bold bright colors.
At the end of the 19th century 1870s-1890s the Egyptian
Revival styles were in vogue once more. At the Height of the Victorian period
the Egyptian style was even more elaborate than before. Often incorporated with
Neo-Greek & Renaissance Revival styles. Victorians were even more
fascinated with these rare finds and incorporated their motifs into jewelry,
furniture, glass and Art pottery. Heavily ornamented overstuffed furniture made
its way into homes, by way of the parlor suite. armchairs with gilt pharaoh's
heads and goat feet, elegant sofa's with palmiform columns and lotus blossoms
filled the middle class homes of France. Other items were made and reflect the
population's desire for the exotic. Clocks and mantel (fireplace) garnitures
featuring sphinxes and other Egyptian motifs were popular made in onyx or ivory
alabaster trimed in gilt bronze with two matching obelisks that would flank the
clock that was crowned with a bronze sphinx. Baccarat manufactured several gilt
bronze and crystal items such as jardinieres, desk items, vases and jewel
caskets. By the late 19th century Egyptian Revival designs merged with the Art
Nouveau style.
During the late 18th century and early 19th century Egyptian
motifs were applied to a wide variety of Decorative arts objects. Publication
of Napoleon's expedition's work, the Description de l'Égypte, began in 1809 and
came out in a series though 1826, inspiring everything form sofas with Sphinxes
for legs to tea sets painted with the pyramids. It was the popularity of the
style that was new.
